I thought I’d start the year off by telling you a few random things you might not know about me.
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, this probably seems a bit late, but you should definitely know more about me. I enjoy activities outside of camping and eating, I promise!
In retrospect though, 2017 was a great year for Smores and Sundresses. I’ve written over 50 blog posts, and I’ve upped my blog newsletter game and Facebook page. 2017 was about growth, as mentioned in this post. 2018’s focus is going to be “consistent”.
Back to the topic, though, here are some fun and random facts about me:
1. I have one tattoo.
Shortly after my husband and I were married, we were at a party somewhere, and one of the attendees was a tattoo artist. I was all about Winnie The Pooh at the time and so, I got a cute little tattoo on my right ankle of Winnie chasing a butterfly. I want more tattoos but can’t decide.
2. I have 9 piercings.
Sounds risque, right? It’s not as naughty as it might seem, I promise. All 9 piercings are in my ears! When I was about 5 or 6, my aunt and my mom took my cousin and I to get our ears pierced. It’s all I wanted in the world at the time. Off we went, I got up on the stool and got the first piercing done. Cried like a baby. I don’t remember anyone telling me it was going to hurt! It took over an hour for me to get the other ear done, I was soooo chicken! My cousin got up on the stool and got hers both done, and it was “do or die”. They finally talked me into getting the other ear done.
Then, when I was a teenager, I fell in love with the look of numerous piercings in the ear, with little gold hoop earrings in each one. So for the next few years, every time my family and I went to the Canadian National Exhibition, I got my ears pierced again. I didn’t even flinch. Not once.
The last piercing was in my ear cartilage, amongst all the rumours going around that it could paralyze you (enter eyeroll here). I did it anyway, because that’s the sort of rebel I am. So that’s that.
3. I never used to like country music.
I fell in love with country music mid-2017, actually. When my husband and I went to a saloon, I liked a few of the songs, but as we hung out with friends over the summer, we started listening to that genre more often. Now, so many of the love songs bring tears to my eyes. Our kids? Yeah, still not country fans!
4. I can’t sew to save my life.
I’m a DIYer. I learned to cook, crochet (a little bit, I’m not the pro my mom is!), bake and various other things. I even figured out how to cut my kid’s hair. With three men in my household, I was about saving money! But ask me to sew anything, and I’m all thumbs, aside from putting a button back on or mending a hole in something. In fact, my husband has to thread the machine for me, and set the tension just right on my sewing machine, because I have no clue how to do it.
5. I can tie a cherry stem into a knot with my tongue.
Ah, the good old days when I had a leisurely one-hour lunch hour at work and some great co-workers to share that time with. One co-worker brought in cherries a few years ago, and taught the bunch of us how to tie the stems. When I told my husband and sent him a picture, of course, he was QUITE impressed with me. I’ve even gone on to teach others this skill!
6. I’ve never been on an airplane.
Yup… I’ve never flown anywhere. I’m hoping my eventual retirement will change that.
7. I can’t stand lima beans.
I had them once when I was a kid, and couldn’t stand them. You will find me plucking them from frozen bagged veggies with a FINE tooth comb. I will never make my kids eat them.
8. I’m allergic to aspirin.
More specifically, ASA, or acetylsalicylic acid. I found out once when I was babysitting a few doors down as a teenager. My parents went out to do some errands while I was babysitting and I took aspirin while there because I had a headache.
Within minutes, my skin had broken out into hives and my throat was closing up. With no one at home, my next-door neighbour had to drive me to the hospital immediately. The doctors gave me Benadryl and I haven’t taken an aspirin since.
9. I easily recognize faces in movies, and can often tell you what other movies someone has been in.
I think I inherited this skill from my mom, actually, and I’ve passed it along to our youngest son. I’ve picked people out of commercials and single season TV shows, and it drives our oldest son crazy. My husband also tries to do this, but sadly, his success rate isn’t what mine is (it’s okay, babe… you’re trying, that’s all that matters).
10. Water is my calm.
Being next to a body of water is one of the few things that soothes my soul completely. During the years that our oldest son was in Kingston for cadets, I was a wreck and found solace by just visiting the lake. When we go camping, I love the peace and serenity of paddling a canoe along, wordlessly. One day, I want to visit the ocean and see if it feels different.
11. I used to wash cars in the neighbourhood for money when I was a teen.
A friend and I would grab a couple of pails, sponges and old rags and knock on random neighbourhood doors offering to wash people’s cars. When we’d done a few, we’d call it quits and go blow our money on junk food.
So there you have it… 11 random things you didn’t know about me. Did any surprise you?
