Hello and Welcome to Smores & Sundresses!
I was camping while still in the womb… my mom was 8 months pregnant with me, and obviously, I don’t remember it, but that’s where my love for the great outdoors began. My parents began the tradition with myself and my two younger brothers, building up our anticipation for our annual camping trip to Algonquin Provincial Park. Every year, we’d come back home from an amazing time together, and begin the countdown until the next summer’s trip.
Fast forward to dating my now husband. He came along on a few of our last family trips before we were married. He wasn’t an avid camper before then, but it certainly grew on him and quickly. After Tyler came along, so continued the tradition my parents started with us. It still warms my heart to see the excitement on my husband’s face when the topic of camping comes up. Over 24 years later, nothing has changed; we still adore camping as a family. We love it even more when my parents get to join us.
How did it bring me to blogging?
We post all kinds of pictures of our camp meals, the gorgeous scenery, and family photos while camping… ALL over Facebook. It’s no secret to anyone who knows us that we look forward to this sacred time every year. We’ve even begun our own hashtags on Instagram: #3families2rivers #therichesjourney2015 #therichesescape2016 and most recently: #2families2rivers2017
Friends began asking me for advice about what to pack for little kids. What kind of meals are best for camping? What are some things we can’t live without on a camping trip? How to keep kids entertained?
I wanted to help friends take advantage of the great outdoors while sharing recipes, fun family activities, and funny stories.
Blogging has been a wonderful outlet for writing, as it’s something I’ve always loved to do. I started out on a free site, and it took me a little under a week to come up with my blog name, and there was nothing as thrilling as registering my domain and transferring everything to my own little corner of the web.
How can Smores and Sundresses help YOU?
If you’re a girly-girl who is going along on a camping trip because everyone else is going (but your idea of camping is a 5-star hotel), I can make you look like the Queen of All Things Camping. I can help you make your trip a breeze with my tried-and-true tips. If you’re not on friendly terms with your kitchen, I can help you look like a domestic goddess. Even if you’re well-acquainted with your kitchen, I can inspire you with new ideas.
My advice about camping can help you with your camping trip. My first book, Menu-Planning for Campers contains some great recipes and camp food ideas and tricks. If you haven’t already checked it out, I think you’ll love it! I recently published a second, follow-up book: Camping With Littles: What to Pack for a Successful and Fun Family Trip.
So who am I?
I’m the mom of two wonderful boys, Tyler (17) and Caleb (11), and the lucky wife to my husband, Devin (almost 20 years). I’m honest, funny and a tad OCD. But basically, I’m a tomboy in a dress.
I met my wonderful husband in my last year of high school, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. He’s my rock, my constant and I will be forever in his debt with all the support and love he’s given me over the years. As we approach our 20th wedding anniversary, plans are being made to celebrate our vow renewal. I am beyond excited for this!
I’m also a virtual assistant. After 15 years in retail, I made the tough decision to leave and start my own business, working from home. My business was born in May 2016 and has been an amazing journey so far. I have met some fantastic people, and my clients are awesome.
I started blogging about three years ago with my cake business and decided to put an end to the business side of things so I could spend more time with my family. My husband, my biggest supporter, was a bit disappointed when I took my cake Facebook page down (and when the cake supply stopped). While I still do cakes for friends and family, I feel less overwhelmed and more at peace because I get to spend that extra time I now have with the people who matter most to me.
If you’d like to see my cake blog, it’s still up and you can view it here. However, here are a couple of quick examples:
It’s my wish that you can find what you’re looking for here at Smores and Sundresses. It’s my goal to make camping easy for everyone.
