What comes to mind when YOU think of the word “filthy”?
For mothers, I’m sure the first thing on their mind is “children”. I won’t say which is worse, because I have two sons. I know full well that girls can be just as filthy as boys!
This particular story took place 9 years ago today, when our youngest son was a little over one year old. I was working days, and my husband was working overnights. My poor husband, it was so rough on him. He was nearly never able to get a full 8 hours’ of sleep, no matter how quiet I was able to keep the kids. He almost always went INTO work exhausted, and came home twice as tired, because they worked him to the bone.
He’d come home form his shift, I’d be at work. Then he’d see our oldest off for the day (Tyler was 7).
On this particular day, he made the mistake of sitting down on the couch after Tyler left.
We had done away with the high chair table, to better include him at the table with us. It let him sit closer and interact better. He was just finishing breakfast, and someone had left Arrowroot cookies on the table.
I’m not sure how long my husband was passed out for, or even what woke him up. Maybe Caleb dropped something and it made a noise, I’m not sure. But when my husband went to check on him, he found this:
When Caleb first noticed Daddy standing there, his reaction was panic. He knew he’d done something bad, but when my husband cracked a smile, this is the look Caleb gave.
Filthy doesn’t even begin to describe it.
The milk was left out and I kept the salt and pepper on the table. In the process of making puddles with the milk, saturating the paper napkins and the doily, he had also managed to polish off half a sleeve of Arrowroot cookies. That is salt and pepper you see sprinkled all over the table.
And just look at that snot-covered face.
The smile brings it all together, doesn’t it?
My husband sent this picture to me while I was at work. I never laughed so hard, because I KNEW he had fallen asleep on the couch and that’s when this all happened. Of course, I showed it to everyone at work.
I might have also been laughing beccause I knew I wasn’t cleaning it up! My husband said he needed to hose the entire kitchen down, it was destroyed.
When I think of the word “filthy”, this picture is the first to come to mind.
