My husband and I recently attended a hometown football game.
This one is a bit of an oddball date because neither of us are really into watching sports. Like, of any kind.
Even as a tomboy, I could never handle watching sports, I always found it to be really boring.
But PLAYING sports, that was entirely different.
My husband played hockey and baseball in his younger years.
I’ve never been on any teams, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing badminton, baseball, and I learned how to throw a football. My husband had no idea until about 15 years into our marriage that I could do that. It shocked him, to say the least.
I think it’s important for women to hold some things back and keep some mystery. It blows him away when he learns something new about me, he thinks he knows everything there is to know. Muahahahaaaaaa.
This year, my husband has had some pretty good luck, and has won tickets to various events. Winning tickets to the Hamilton Ti-Cat game was another stroke of good luck. What better way to take advantage than to use the tickets for a date night?
We’d been to one game prior to this, and we enjoyed it then, too.
City bus transportation was free if you had a ticket for that day’s game. I had no idea this was a thing.
Being honest, I cannot stand our team’s cheer. I can’t believe that’s the best they could come up with, and I cringed every time. But the REST of the experience was awesome.
We met a friend just inside. Her kids are junior Tiger-Cats, and it was so cute to see them suited up and excited to play around with the big boys.
We watched the warmups and really got a kick out watching Brandon Banks grooving to the music on the field. He was doing a little dance and knew every single word. He was just off in his own little musical world, very amusing.
A talented young lady sang our national anthem, and the flag across the field was humongous. I always get a little choked up during Oh Canada and can’t resist singing.
Not being a major sports fan, I knew none of the player’s names, and I really don’t understand the rules of football. If you ask me, avoid the ball at all costs, otherwise, it’s a death wish. But hey, these big, hulking guys can handle it.
The Football Game
Calgary started off strong. Going into the second quarter, it was 6-0 for Calgary but Hamilton bounced back.
I have to explain the following picture… not being a sporty kinda gal, it can be a challenge to know when to cheer, so, when our team scored, and I clapped accordingly, I felt QUITE proud of myself. So much so, I had to tell my husband, who was in a really long line for snacks at the time:
Moving along… In the third quarter, Hamilton rallied and by the last quarter, we were tied at 25. This was amazing. From what my husband and I heard, the Stampeders scored 60 points in their previous game, so we weren’t feeling overly confident. But the Tiger-Cats held their own, right down to the last 36 seconds of the game.
Then a penalty was called against Hamilton, and Calgary scored a touchdown, bringing the game to 28-25.
No one agreed with the penalty call. Of course, right?
I was really hoping that Hamilton would win the one game we attended.
After the game, they opened the playing field to families.
I couldn’t resist joining in because I’ve never been on a “pro” football field, it was something new. We made our way and watched the kids tossing mini-footballs around, and we took some pictures before making our way back home.
With our free ride on the bus, we kinda felt like Wayne and Garth with backstage passes…
We decided to have a nightcap at Boston Pizza. With both kids in bed, we ordered an appetizer and a couple of drinks. It was nice to catch up because we both had a crazy week.
We talked about how much we enjoyed the game. It’s definitely not a boring experience. We’d love to bring the boys if scheduling works out for Tyler.
So, if you’re looking for a fun night out, I would definitely suggest going to a hometown football game. It’s a great opportunity to feel hometown pride.
I’d love to hear about your experience if you’ve attended a football game. Please tell me about your experiences in the comments!
