If your childhood was anything like mine, nothing said summer like popsicles. Remember Dickie Dee? They were THE original food trucks. When the Dickie Dee guys came around, I was always first in line for something chocolatey, but when they were all out, an orange creamsicle was my next choice.
I remember seeing the selection on the side of the Dickie Dee freezer. That red-white-and-blue rocket treat was a staple, along with pre-made ice cream cones, ice cream sandwiches, and one of my favourites, Creamsicles.
Come to think of it, maybe I remember these so much because they always seemed to be out of Fudgsicles? It’s funny (but not really), even the convenience store had the same problem.
At any rate, these are delicious, and I’m sharing the recipe!
Nowadays, the popsicles are cheaply made and have a ton of preservatives and sugar in them. I like knowing what my kids are eating, and being able to pronounce the ingredients, so every now and then, throughout the summer months, I make these.
I also like to freeze lemonade and sometimes chocolate milk in popsicle trays too… they’re always yummy!
What you need to make these popsicles:
- Popsicle trays
- orange juice
- vanilla extract
- orange extract
This recipe makes just enough for me to fill both of our trays:
Pour all the ingredients into a blender (or mix by hand) until well-blended and pour into your trays. Freeze for a few hours. After they’re frozen, pop one out and relive your childhood!
You can substitute the orange juice for just about any juice. Grape is also a good flavour for these, as well as any berry juices. Hello, strawberry creamsicles!
Popsicles are very easy to make and only require a minimum amount of preparation. You can add in fresh chunks of fruit in with the juice too, for a healthy treat.
I hope you enjoy these as much as we do!
